11 Great Ways to Refresh a Classic Room

A light touch of modernity will not interfere even with a traditional interior. Here are the tricks that many designers use to bring the classics to life and refresh room designs.

1. Add a black color
Classic interiors are often decorated in muted colors. In the old days, fabric manufacturers and dyers were technically unable to give textiles bright colors. Today soft paints are used in classic interiors because it is so historically accepted. Using black will add contrast that was unattainable for designers of the past.

2. Add a contrasting graphic design
Textile manufacturers have come a long way, and today prints can be of absolutely any color. Classic furniture combined with classic textiles and wall colors can look too dull. If you add an expressive graphic element, the room will immediately look more cheerful.

The ornament can be introduced not only through textiles - on curtains, upholstery, carpets, but also through wallpaper, tiles, etc.

3. Mix unexpected colors
In classic rooms, several types of textiles are often used, matched to the tone. Breaking harmony with vibrant color will liven up any boring mix.

Note the purple color in this room. This is not just a disorganized bunch of something flashy. There is some logic here. The shade on the rug echoes in the tone of the pillows and echoes in the bouquet of flowers on the bedside table.

4. Work as an editor
Many traditional rooms should be re-edited. Accessories and knickknacks accumulate over the years, and nothing stands out anymore, although every single thing, it seems, is not bad in itself. Choose one object to which the eye will be drawn, add a couple of "minor characters" and remove everything else.

5. Replace carpet
The living room, where classic furniture stands on the carpet, looks static. If the furniture is solid and you are not planning to change it, freshen up the look with a modern rug. The sisal model is a great option. For the brave - a bright carpet with a graphic pattern in the form of stripes or animal skins.

6. Add a new pouf
To make a traditional room look more modern, look for a way to “relax” the style a little. Comfort is the key to all doors. In the living room, a large pouf will perfectly cope with the role of a relaxing element.

7. Change upholstery
The secret to transforming a classic piece into a modern piece is to create a conflict between the style of the furniture and the pattern of its upholstery. A small cage (as in this case), a herringbone or a goosefoot can completely transform traditional furniture.

8. Change the lampshades

Look for something in the shape of a cylinder or parallelepiped and discard all folds, ruffles, and irregular shapes. All this looks out of date. Find a simple lampshade that is proportional and follows the shape of the lamp base. A safe bet for table lamps is black.

9. Break the kits
A dining set in which a table and chairs are ideally combined are things of bygone days.

There are many ways to play around with this theme. You can place a chair from another set at the head of the table, or upholster the chairs with different fabrics. Or add an ultra-modern dining group to the classic interior.

10. Use reflections
When I imagine an old-fashioned, classic-style room, I always see a combination of a few soothing shades and too many matte surfaces. A couple of shiny or glossy details can bring such a room back to life. It's amazing how just one reflective element can transfer an interior from yesterday to today.

11. Fall in love with abstraction
A contemporary artwork and a transparent coffee table have been wonderful ways to update this classic room. If there is one thing that all old-fashioned interiors have in common, it is too many rules. So just relax and have fun!
