7 Most Common Dental Problems (and How to Avoid Them)

It may be difficult to believe, but your dental health indeed plays a major part in your general health and wellness. Improper teeth routine can lead to health problems that you wouldn’t even begin to expect like heart disease, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and others. Your mouth is a breeding ground for large numbers of bacteria, and the best way to reduce them is to develop proper oral care and visiting the dentist for professional checkups.

1. Bad Breath
Halitosis or in other words bad breath can be both annoying and uncomfortable for people experiencing it,  no matter how common it is. Dental issues that cause unpleasant smells from your mouth are gum disease (or in medical terms - gingivitis), cavities, mouth dryness, mouth bacteria, and oral cancer.

Brushing, flossing, rinsing your mouth, and cleaning your tongue every day should fix your bad breath issue. If not, there can be a severe health problem causing it. If proper teeth care fails to fix the problem, then consult the dentist for determining its cause and choosing appropriate treatment.

2. Cavities
Cavities are one of the most common diseases in America. Cavities, also called tooth decay, develop when the foods that you consume mix with the plaque on your teeth. This dangerous combination produces acid which then dissolves your enamel. Consuming healthy foods and drinks, avoiding sugary soft beverages, developing a proper and regular teeth routine, and frequently visiting the dentist are all essential methods to prevent cavities.

3. Gingivitis
Gingivitis also referred to as periodontal and gum disease is very common and is actually associated with diseases like heart attacks and strokes. Gingivitis is an infection that damages your mouth tissue and can be the cause of receding gums. Good teeth care and frequent visits to the dentist are great ways to avoid this common dental issue.

4. Mouth Sores
Most of us have had wounds in our mouths during our lives. You should remember that this kind of dental issue usually vanishes on its own. The most common kinds of mouth sores that you may experience include canker and cold sores, blisters, thrush, and mouth ulcers.

5. Oral Cancer
Researches show that there are more than 300,000 newly diagnosed cases of oral cancer annually and this disease has already affected millions of people. In America, there is one person dying every hour daily because of mouth cancer. Oral cancer can develop on the throat, lips, and mouth. This disease can be easily cured if detected and treated on time.

6. Enamel erosion
Enamel erosion is caused by acidic bacteria that damage the teeth enamel. It can eventually lead to tooth loss. The symptoms of tooth erosion typically vary from sensitive teeth to more serious issues that can lead to cracked teeth. This dental issue is pretty common, but also quite avoidable with proper teeth routine, frequent dental checkups, and a healthy diet.

7. Sensitive teeth
If you experience tooth sensitivity, then you surely understand just how painful it can be depending on the type of it. You may suffer from teeth sensitivity while chewing on sweets, drinking hot or cold beverages, having ice cream, and even inhaling cold air. Sensitive teeth can be easily cured. Make sure to consult with the specialist to diagnose the cause of the problem and treat it properly.

The bottom line
Don’t let minor dental issues develop into serious diseases and cause harm not only to your dental health but to your overall wellbeing too. Schedule an appointment with the specialist immediately if there are any of the above-mentioned issues bothering you. And remember that it is crucial to treat the problem at its initial stage to avoid any unwanted complications.
