How to Reduce Pinched Nerve Pain at Home

A pinched nerve or carpal tunnel syndrome can be painful and impair your ability to function at home or at work. Fortunately, there are some home treatments that can help relieve pain and suffering until you can see a doctor. Keep in mind that they are only temporary treatments, so you should still see a doctor for a comprehensive examination and individualized treatment plan.

1. Rest and Elevate the Limb
One of the most effective ways to ease the pinched nerve pain is to rest the afflicted limb as soon as possible. Give the afflicted region a break by avoiding activities that exacerbate the discomfort, such as heavy lifting or repetitive motions like typing. Rest can help lessen inflammation in the body and avoid future discomfort or consequences. If you're experiencing discomfort in an extremity, such as your arm or leg, consider elevating it to minimize swelling.

2. Use Cushions to Support Your Arm or Leg as You Relax
Ice or heat treatment can effectively treat pinched nerves. An ice pack wrapped in a towel can help decrease swelling and numb the region. Apply it for 15 to 20 minutes, multiple times each day. Heat treatment can also be used by using a warm compress or heating pad to relax the muscles and promote blood flow to the afflicted area. Switch between cold and heat based on whatever delivers the greatest relief.

3. Perform Gentle Stretches
Light stretching exercises might help reduce pressure on the afflicted nerve and increase flexibility. Stretching the wrist and forearm can help with carpal tunnel syndrome. Always stretch slowly and carefully to avoid additional damage. Examples of stretching exercises are wrist flexor, extensor, forearm, nerve gliding, and shoulder shrugs.

Keep in mind that stress can worsen discomfort and tension. To assist in managing stress and muscular tension, consider trying a few relaxation techniques such as meditation, moderate yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

4. Maintain Good Posture
Poor posture can lead to nerve compression or carpal tunnel disease, particularly if you spend a lot of time sitting at a computer. To reduce pain, ensure that your workspace is ergonomically designed. Also, maintain proper posture by keeping your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.

Here are some suggestions to bear in mind:

- Set your chair height so that your feet are flat on the floor and your knees form a 90-degree angle;
- Use a chair with lumbar support that corresponds with your lower back's natural curvature, and adjust the backrest to provide comfortable spinal support;
- Place your display at eye level so that you do not have to crane your head up or down. The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level.
- Position your keyboard and mouse so that your elbows are at a 90-degree angle and your wrists are straight when typing. Your hands should be floating pleasantly over the keyboard;
- Sit back in your chair, back upright, shoulders relaxed, and resist the impulse to slouch forward or slump;
- Keep your feet level on the ground or on a footrest, and avoid crossing your legs, which can impair circulation and posture;
- Take regular breaks and shift positions during the day;
- Use a keyboard tray with adjustable settings to maintain your arms in a natural, relaxed position;
- Use a wrist rest to provide additional support and maintain your wrists in a neutral posture when typing.
- Keep your workplace well-lit to avoid eye strain.

5. Use a Wrist Rest or Splint
If you work at a desk during the day, utilize a wrist rest for extra support. This keeps your wrists in a neutral posture while typing. Wearing a wrist splint at night might help keep your wrist in a neutral posture and relieve strain on the median nerve.

When to See a Doctor
While some home treatments may give temporary relief, you should seek medical assistance to address the underlying source of your problems. A healthcare practitioner may provide a thorough diagnosis and suggest relevant treatments or therapies to help you manage your illness efficiently.
