Renovating a Two-Level Apartment: How to Avoid Basic Mistakes

A two-level apartment is the dream of many people. Thanks to the excellent zoning of space, staying in such a home gives the feeling of a house located in the middle of a noisy city. In such properties, the bedroom is often located on the second floor, and the kitchen, office, and living room are on the first floor. The most successful design solutions for such an apartment are hi-tech or loft. However, some other approaches will look quite appropriate in it. Below we will talk about what to pay attention to when renovating a two-level apartment.

General nuances of renovating a two-level apartment
The most common and serious mistake that can be made about a newly purchased two-level apartment is an incorrect distribution of zones. However, there is no consensus on which rooms should be placed where. Here it is important to be guided by the parameters of the room and your lifestyle.

For example, in an apartment where there are often guests and small children, it is better to place the children's room upstairs so as not to disturb the children in the evenings. If there are no children, the living room can be located on the second level. Particularly successful would be the option with an attic, from which there is access to a balcony or roof, allowing you to quickly get into fresh air.

Duplex apartments often have a larger area. Therefore, zoning can be largely conditional. After all, when you start building partitions, you can turn your home into a real labyrinth of small rooms, the exit from which will be very difficult to find.

The most correct approach is to renovate a two-level apartment in the form of a studio. The division of rooms is done through finishing. For example, different colors of the floor or walls, screens, or podiums. However, the space must be practical. Zones should be in harmony with each other, and not be a motley collection of different styles, and also flow logically from one another. After all, if, for example, you place the bedroom and restroom at different ends (or levels) of the apartment, going to the restroom at night can become a real challenge.

If household members cannot decide on a design, this can cause numerous quarrels and disagreements. The universal style is minimalism, but in an apartment where there are small children, toys scattered throughout the rooms will not leave a trace of such a concept. In this case, the Scandinavian style, diluted with design elements, may be suitable. Its light colors will fill the room with air. Kitchen design in this style will also look clean and beautiful.

The classic renovation in a two-level apartment looks interesting. The interior looks most successful in subdued shades, which are harmoniously complemented by modern details, for example, imitation brickwork on one of the walls. The most important thing is that the top and bottom of the apartment do not contrast with each other.

It is certainly worth mentioning a very important object in a two-level apartment - the staircase. Even if the ideal design option has been chosen, you should make sure of its practicality. If the family has a child, elderly people, or animals, the staircase should be exclusively a flight staircase.

What is important to consider when renovating a two-level apartment
The main feature and main obstacle when renovating a two-level apartment is its static nature. For example, in a studio apartment, you can vary the arrangement of rooms at your discretion. While in the two-level version, you need to proceed from what is available at the very beginning. Firstly, there are stairs and windows, based on the location of which zoning can be done.

Designing an apartment on two floors is very exciting. From the outside it may seem that this is very simple, but, gradually introducing yourself into this process, you can be convinced of the opposite.

The most correct would be to place the bathroom or storage areas (dressing room, closet) against a blank wall. If the design allows, when renovating a two-level apartment, you can create a mezzanine - a semicircular tier that makes it possible to view the first level (usually the guest area) from above. In this case, the staircase will not be placed in a corner or closed space, but in the center of the room.

It is worth deciding in advance on what level the private zone will be located and on what level the public zone will be located. If the plans include placing bedrooms on the second tier, you should take care of the bathroom, and also think about whether it will be convenient for household members to constantly walk up and down, especially at night. The opinions of designers on this issue are divided. Therefore, it is important to rely on your preferences and the nature of the premises.

Often a duplex apartment is created by combining two apartments on different floors. This approach has its advantages. For example, if you place a kitchen, dining room, living room, and bedroom with a walk-through bathroom, as well as built-in wardrobes on the first floor, then on the second you need to make a guest area, an office, a cinema room, a dressing room, and a bathroom, as well as a utility room. This is very convenient for small families.

If children live in the apartment, it is better to make their room next to the parent’s bedroom on one floor, and the living room, kitchen, and guest bedrooms on the other. This will allow guests not to disturb sleeping children in the evenings, and parents will not have to walk up the stairs from the bedroom to their children.

What kind of renovation a two-level apartment will take depends, first of all, on your lifestyle and your own taste. But the best-looking interior is one that is designed in the same style on both tiers. Otherwise, the space will seem disjointed.

You should also not overfill the rooms with objects, even if you want to introduce notes of eclecticism into the interior. It is important that each element is appropriate and performs a specific function. After all, if a two-level apartment is littered with small parts, it will look more like an abandoned attic. The best solution is a minimalist style.

The decoration may differ in different rooms but should be done in a single concept. For example, in the host area, it is worth paying more attention to individual elements associated with a particular family (photos, favorite colors, etc.), while the guest area can be made more neutral. If you want to add brightness, then home textiles and decor, which can be easily changed if desired, will cope well with this task.
